KONA, Hawaiʻi – A 16-year-old Kailua-Kona girl sustained critical injuries early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle collision on Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway (Highway 19) in North Kona. The crash occurred near the 83-mile marker, in the vicinity of Kiholo Bay Road.

Hawaiʻi Island police responded to the incident at 5:07 a.m. A preliminary investigation determined that the teen was driving a black 2023 Toyota Camry southbound when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway. It then struck several large rocks before overturning multiple times.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Queen’s North Hawaiʻi Community Hospital in critical condition. She has since been upgraded to stable condition.

The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a major traffic collision investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Officer Adam Roberg at (808) 326-4646, ext. 229, or email adam.roberg@hawaiicounty.gov.
