Waikoloa Man Charged with Felony Abuse, DUI and Driving with a Suspended License

Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Waikoloa man, 30-year-old Tyler Nicholas Zara was charged in relation to an October 24th domestic and traffic incident(s) in Waikoloa.
As the Complaint alleges, Zara, was charged with four (4) offenses including Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member (abuse in the presence of a minor under the age of 14), Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant, Driving While License Suspended or Revoked, and No No-Fault Insurance. The most serious offense, Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member is a class C felony offense that carries a maximum penalty of five (5) years in prison. At the time of his arrest, Zara was also arrested for an outstanding warrant for an unrelated district court matter. A review of court records indicates that Zara is also out on bond pending another unrelated Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant offense which occurred in January 2021.
Zara will make his initial appearance today in Kona District Court. He remains in custody in lieu of $13,550.00 bail on all matters.
The investigation was handled by Officer Michael Collings, South Kohala Patrol, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Stephen Frye.
The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
