Wainaku Structure Fire

This afternoon around 2:41 pm a call came into the Hawaii Fire Department of a structure fire on Ohana Place just of Wainaku St. in the Hilo District of Big Island.

Upon arrival, HFD came to find a single-story residential 2 BR / 1 BA structure built in 1930 with its basement fully involved in the fire. HFD performed an offensive attack to contain the flames to the building and the fire was reported to be brought under control within 6 mins of the first unit’s arrival and an overhaul was performed to the structure. The fire is reported to be extinguished around 3:01 pm. There were no reported injuries.

Though the cause of the fire remains under investigation. A female squatter is reported to have been taken into custody as a suspect in this fire by Hawaii Police Department with HFD Fire Inspector has determined the probable cause of this fire to be arson via incendiary.

Members of the Facebook group shared photos and videos as the smoke from the fire could be seen and reportedly smelled from miles.
