High Surf Warning Remains in Effect for West-Facing Shores of Big Island

by Thunda

A High Surf Warning remains in effect to the west-facing shores of the Big Island through this afternoon until 6 pm this evening.

A large west-northwest swell will continue to generate large breaking waves along most north and west-facing shores of the island chain today. This swell will begin to gradually lower tonight, but surf will likely remain within the High Surf Advisory criteria along shorelines exposed to this swell through early Thursday morning.

Surf is forecasted to be within the 9 to a 12-foot range for the West-facing shores of the Big Island. Large, breaking surf, significant shorebreaks, and dangerous currents make entering the water very hazardous. Know your limits; when in doubt, do not go out. Impacts could be, but not limited to ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves, and strong longshore and rip currents.

Affected Monitored Beaches:

A High Surf Warning also is in effect for North and West facing shores of Niʻihau, Kauai, and Oahu.

A High Surf Advisory has been issued for the North and West facing shores of Molokai and for north-facing shores of Maui.

Unmonitored lands and waters in the impact area described in the alert will also be impacted.

If conditions change before expiration or the event needs to be extended, an update or cancellation will be issued.
