South Hilo Sanitary Landfill Scale House is Without Power this Morning Due to a Downed Power Line

by Thunda

A lightning strike at the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill occurred last night at about 10:00 p.m. and broke a power line pole.  The facility is without power this morning, July 7.

As of 5:00 a.m. today, HELCO has cleared the pole that broke, and it is safe to enter and use the sort station today. HELCO is still at the landfill working on rewiring the pole to restore power to the site.

Customers should expect longer lines at the landfill scale house, as power to the site has yet to be restored and all transactions will need to be done manually.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Please visit our www.hawaiizerowaste.org website for future closure information and locations, or call our Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division Office, at 961-8270.
